We are delighted to offer our first-ever holiday in Marseille. The second biggest city in France, it is one of the great coastal cities of Western Europe. Founded by Phoenicians in the 7th century BC, it is a city of a remarkable historic and cultural pedigree. Its medieval Vieux Port has the atmosphere of North Africa and contrasts wonderfully with the elegant 19th-century avenues and quiet elegant parks and squares.
The city has an extensive and varied cultural scene and was European City of Culture in 2013. It boasts an important opera house, several big theatres, seven art galleries and a clutch of historic and maritime museums. During our visit we shall embrace every aspect of Marseille’s vibrant and fascinating attractions, including a day in Aix-en- Provence, a visit to the Chateau d’If immortalised by Dumas in ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ and the opportunity of visiting the Opera for a performance of Mussorgsky’s masterpiece ‘Boris Godunov’.
