2018 is the centenary of the death of Claude Debussy – one of the best-loved and most important composers of the 20th century.
Debussy came to England just once and spent much of the time at the Grand Hotel Eastbourne, which was already one of the great hotels on the South Coast. During his stay, he completed the orchestration of one of his absolute masterpieces, ‘La Mer’.
The Grand Hotel is still one of the great hotels of Southern England. It has preserved the room in which Debussy lived and worked. The hotel’s status as a centre for musical excellence has been preserved in the shape of the weekly concerts for Palm Court Orchestra which have been broadcast by the BBC for decades.
