Debussy in Eastbourne & Glyndebourne

10th – 12th July 2018

2018 is the centenary of the death of Claude Debussy – one of the best-loved and most important composers of the 20th century.

Debussy came to England just once and spent much of the time at the Grand Hotel Eastbourne, which was already one of the great hotels on the South Coast. During his stay, he completed the orchestration of one of his absolute masterpieces, ‘La Mer’.

The Grand Hotel is still one of the great hotels of Southern England. It has preserved the room in which Debussy lived and worked. The hotel’s status as a centre for musical excellence has been preserved in the shape of the weekly concerts for Palm Court Orchestra which have been broadcast by the BBC for decades.

We have built this Cultural Break around Debussy and his association with the Grand Hotel. Clients will spend two nights in the hotel and there will be talks on Debussy’s piano music, his time spent in Eastbourne and his opera ‘Pelleas et Melisande’.

The break will be dominated by two outstanding performances. For Day 1 in the evening, I am delighted to say that we have secured the services of the legendary French pianist, Pascal Rogé, who will give a recital featuring the music of Debussy in one of the elegant public rooms in the hotel.

Pascal Rogé is undoubtedly one of the finest living exponents of French piano music. We are doubly fortunate in that his wife, Ami, who is also a concert pianist, will be there too – which means they can play the duet arrangement of La Mer for us. They will be spending some time with us and so clients will have the opportunity of meeting and chatting with both the maestro and his wife!

The recital will be followed by dinner in the excellent hotel restaurant. On Day 2, we shall spend much of the day at Glyndebourne, where we attend a performance of their new production of ‘Pelleas et Mélisande’ and dine in one of the Festival restaurants. On Day 3 we shall watch Ken Russell’s wonderful film about Debussy with the incomparable Oliver Reed in the title rôle, followed by illustrated talks and discussions. The break will conclude with a light lunch in the hotel.

It is likely that demand for this unique event will be very high. Clients are urged to book as soon as possible. At present we cannot guarantee taking more than 25 people on this tour.
