Join us for an action-packed and informative 7 days devoted to exploring the locations and analysing the events of the Spanish Civil War. Our first base is the Hotel Capitol on the Gran Vía in the centre of Madrid. This is the building in which many foreign correspondents and famous people caught up in the war sought refuge. Madrid itself was the epicentre of much of the fighting and we shall visit the sites of several of the battles around the city. We shall spend a morning discussing artists’ reaction to the conflict, in particular, Picasso’s ‘Guernica’

Our second base is Aragón – no region was affected more. We shall stay in Teruel‚ scene of possibly the most savage fighting of the war. A great historic city‚ completely destroyed by bombardment by both sides and re-built in the 1950s. From here, we travel out to the battlefields around the Ebro Valley (where we visit the trenches) and to Belchite‚ another beautiful Mudejar town‚ completely destroyed and left‚ an astonishing monument to the destructive nature of warfare.
